Walter Schamu, FAIA

Walter is the president and founder of SMG Architects, and is responsible for the firm's historic, residential, religious and club projects. Walter is respected throughout the region for his expertise in historic architecture, and is the founder of the Baltimore Architecture Foundation. Walter's easy-going nature, sense of humor, and ability to recite poetry appropriate for any occasion make him a favorite of both clients and colleagues. Walter is a skilled watercolorist and accomplished horticulturist with a highly-publicized rooftop garden in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood where he lives with his wife, Nancy. Walter earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and served as an Engineering Officer in the U.S. Navy. He lectures extensively on historic architecture and creative adaptive use, and gives frequent architectural tours of Baltimore.

 

 

Tony Machowski, AIA

Tony joined SMG Architects in 1984 as a founding partner, and directs the firm's Laboratory Design Studio.  In addition to creating laboratory spaces for the region's premier biomedical and academic communities, Tony works extensively in K-12 school design, and historic renovation.  He is the firm's leading expert on construction administration, and is experienced at planning complex phased renovations.  Known for his dry sense of humor and relaxed attitude, Tony is regarded as a friend by his staff and clients.  He spends his free-time working on his 1950 Studebaker truck, and creating wood sculptures in his home workshop in Hunt Valley, Maryland, where he lives with his wife, Kathryn.  Tony earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Michigan, and regularly attends courses on advanced laboratory design.

Victor began his tenure with SMG Architects in 1987, and opened the firm's office in Wheeling, West Virginia three years later.  Victor is the managing partner of the Wheeling office where he serves academic, institutional, commercial and residential clients.  Victor's hands-on approach to each of his clients' projects has resulted in loyal, long-term relationships with some of the leading colleges and religious institutions in the region.  An epicurean and exceptional cook, Victor treats the SMG staff to a culinary tour of Italy at the staff retreat held each year in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.  A fly-fisherman, and avid Steelers fan, Victor is a mentor and friend to his staff, and highly regarded by his clients.  He lives in Wheeling with his wife Isha, son Victor, and daughter Alexandra.  Victor earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kentucky.

Tom joined SMG in spring 2002 and leads SMG’s residential design studio, serving as advisor and mentor to the professional staff. Tom has offered design assistance to the Neighborhood Design Center for nearly 20 years and is currently the Rehab Specialist on behalf of SMG Architects for Healthy Neighborhoods, Inc. He was appointed to be on the Special Commission on State Parks in 2000 and to the Governor’s Park Advisory Commission in 2001.

Wendy Scatterday has assisted and managed the development of programs, designs, construction documents and specifications for a variety of architectural project types since joining SMG in 1998. Wendy is a creative designer and problem solver who brings a unique perspective to each project. Her excellent communication skills, attention to detail and diplomatic style are proven assets as SMG strives to provide the highest level of service to our clients. Wendy is proficient in AutoCAD and she organizes projects throughout multiple phases of design and production to ensure the highest level of detail and consistency. Wendy serves on the Board of Directors for both the Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless and the Ohio Valley Children’s Museum, as well as being chair for the West Virginia AIA Design Awards for the past 7 years.

Charles Patterson came to SMG in 2000 and has worked on projects of varying scale and complexity. He takes a great interest in design and though he enjoys the modernist “vocabulary”, he has also skillfully handled numerous projects of a historic nature. During his time at SMG Architects, he has been a reliable, approachable and hardworking associate who has flourished in the "trial by fire" nature of the architecture profession. In addition to his work at SMG Architects, he has volunteered his graphic design abilities to the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and he is also an avid fabricator, working in both metal and wood.

Jillian began at SMG in 2006 and has worked on a wide variety of projects. Initially she was solely focused on health care architecture but within six months was moving on to include residential, historic, and educational and laboratory projects. Educated in passive design she enjoys studying the ‘green’ movement that is guiding much of design these days and tries to incorporate it into as many projects as possible.

Zachary recently rejoined SMG in 2010 after graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, and a seven month intensive internship in Zurich, Switzerland. His experience in the schematic design phase ranges from small residential projects to multi-million dollar museum projects. A long interest in photography has given him an acute sense of space, and helps to find solutions which best fit clients ambitions. His work at SMG has included residential and commercial work, historic renovation and new construction.

Sandy joined SMG in 2000 as an executive assistant, giving support to any staff as needed, often helping with marketing proposals and other administrative tasks. She has since gone on to become SMG Baltimore’s Office Manager overseeing all administrative duties.

Julie Doerr serves as the Office Manager for the Wheeling Office. In addition to managing day-to-day operations of the office, she has overseen and participated in the production of architectural drawings and specifications for all projects since joining SMG in 1995. She maintains the computer network, as well as all project information files and construction administration documents. Julie contributes her excellent AutoCad skills and organizational abilities so that every project production process is as efficient as possible. Julie is an avid photographer and has had several photos selected for inclusion in local juried exhibitions over the past 3 years.
